Announcements & Training Plan for Week of December 11, 2017

posted by Sid Voss   [ updated ]

✔️Come prepared each day for skiing and dryland, the week’s workout plan may change based on when we can get on snow and if we have a race.

Our tentative plan for the week--see the training plan below for details:
•Monday at school.
•Tuesday is either a race at Elm Creek or ski at Wirth (Three Rivers/Elm Creek sounds like they are not having races this week, but we will know for sure on Monday.)
•Wednesday is ski at Wirth.  Note:  The bus on this day will not be back in time for the activity bus.  Also, JV2 may come to practice Wednesday, since there will be no practice for JV2 on Thursday.
•Thursday will be announced for location/time, but there is no practice for JV2.
•Friday is the Ski-A-thon at Wirth, 9:00-12:00.  We will have a bus leaving HHS at 8:30 and returning the HHS at 12:00.

✔️Remember to get out and start raising money for the Ski-A-Thon taking place at 9:0 am on Friday, December 15th at Theodore Wirth Park. Our goal is for each skier to raise $100. If you raise $150 or more you will get a team buff. Other prizes go out to skiers who raise the most money. Click this link to check the website for the fundraising page to make donations.

✔️Make sure to sign up ASAP for Ski Camp if you are interested in going! It’s a fun time and always a highlight of the year for skiers.

✔️ Remember to bring your trail passes to practice each day!  The Three Rivers Pass is pink; the Wirth pass is yellow.  If you have not received both passes yet, see Coach Voss at practice.

✔️ People racing the JNQ at the end of the week come talk to us Monday to work through their workout plan for the week. We want to set you up to succeed this coming weekend!

Monday
Whole team practice race warm up for tomorrow’s race, or if no race, a team time trial. If there is a race, varsity should see a coach about waxing. Others, If you waxed last week or the week before, your wax will be still good. See a coach if you have questions.

Announcements and Training Plan for Week of December 4, 1017

posted Dec 3, 2017, 9:29 AM by Sid Voss   [ updated Dec 3, 2017, 9:51 AM ]

✔️ We potentially have a race on Wednesday at Hyland. Please make sure your skis are waxed and ready to go. Make sure you have your uniform and base layers to wear under the uniform ready to go also. We should know early in the week if this race is a go or not.

✔️ Other workouts this week are subject to change depending if we can get on snow. Stay tuned to Remind/Website for changes.

✔️ Have your skis, boots, and poles at school this week!  There is a short loop at Wirth with man-made snow.  Right now it is a section with only uphill and downhill, so it is not good for new skiers.  See Tuesday/Wednesday in the training plan below.

✔️Remember, if we are practicing at school, get changed and come to the classroom for announcements.  If we are going to ski at Three Rivers or Wirth, get changed, put your skis and poles in the trailer, and be on the bus by 3:10.

✔️ Please make sure you have paid your Booster Club fee on the website.

✔️ Remember to get out and start raising money for the Ski-A-Thon taking place at 9am on Friday, December 15th at Theodore Wirth Park. Our goal is for each skier to raise $100. If you raise $150 or more you will get a team buff. Other prizes go out to skiers who raise the most money. Check the website for the fundraising page to make donations.

✔️Make sure to sign up ASAP for Ski Camp if you are interested in going. The deadline technically has passed so get your forms and payments in ASAP.

✔️Get some friends and family together to go volunteer at the Optimist Tree Lot. They are a big supporter of our program. Click here to sign up! (Also on website)

✔️Please see Coach Voss on Monday to get your Three Rivers trail pass if you don't have yours yet.  Also see coach Voss if you have not yet registered online for your Wirth pass.  The passes are a part of your athletic and booster club fees.  Please see this for more info on passes.

✔️ If you have booster club skis and you need your bindings switched to NNN/ProLink instead of SNS, please get your skis to Coach Voss on Monday!  Here is the info about bindings.

Three Rivers Passes 17-18

posted Nov 29, 2017, 9:17 AM by Sid Voss   [ updated Nov 29, 2017, 9:26 AM ]

All of our skiers will receive a Three River Parks seasonal ski pass this week. If you didn't get yours, please see one of the coaches. This info is about Three Rivers Passes; skiers will also receive a pass for Wirth Park and you will get more info on the Wirth Pass this week.

When you receive your Three Rivers pass, write your name using an ink pen in the space provide. We suggest taking a picture of both the front and back.

You must carry your Three Rivers Ski Pass when you are skiing at any Three Rivers Parks, except at race meets when are wearing your uniform.

Three Rivers says, "You must carry and display the pass in a visible location."  Some people attach the pass to a jacket zipper or wear a lanyard with the pass.  Just make sure you always have it at Three Rivers parks!

The park police do check for passes.  If you don't have one with you, you will need to buy a daily pass for $6 at most parks, or $9 at Elm Creek or Hyland. Sometimes park police fine people without passes. Remember to bring your pass and keep it safe.

If you lose your pass, the cost to replace the season pass is $37.50.

Your pass is good for any Three Rivers park.  You can use the pass to ski other times besides our team practices. Here are some Three Rivers parks that have good Nordic Trails:

Elm Creek (man-made snow and natural snow)
Hyland  (man-made snow and natural snow)
Glen Lake (natural snow only)
French Park (natural snow only)
Baker (natural snow only)
Carver (natural snow only)
Eagle Creek (natural snow only)
Park Locations

Note:  Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis/Golden Valley is a Minneapolis Park and has its own ski pass—our skiers will receive this pass as well.

1st Year Skiers: The Weekly Plan for Your Skis

posted Nov 26, 2017, 10:37 AM by Sid Voss

Our skiers keep their skis and poles in the Wax Room for practices during the week, and take their skis home for the weekend so they can ski on their own or join a possible early Saturday morning optional practice.  (Even though it looks like we will not be on snow this week, we will be waxing our skis.)

No matter which school you are at, you will need to bring your skis with you to school on Monday mornings.  However, skis/poles (even in bags) are not allowed on the buses, so you will need to get a ride to school. Once your skis are at school, here is what you do:
  • High School:  Put your skis in the wax room—if you do not know the combo for the door, see a team member for the combo.
  • North Junior High:  There is a storage closet near the cafeteria for the skis/poles during the day.  Check with the office for the exact location of the closet.  After school, grab your skis and go to practice.
  • West Junior High: There is a storage closet next to the elevator across from the cafeteria.  Check with the front door receptionist to unlock the closet door.  Try to keep all the Nordic ski bags separate from the Alpine stuff.
    • On Monday, before practice, one of the coaches will pick up the skis and bring them to the Wax Room at the High School.
    • We will pick up skis only on Mondays, and we will only pick up skis and poles (preferably in ski bags).  We will not bring backpacks, duffels, etc...bring that stuff yourself on the activity bus.
At the end of the week, you should take your skis home, but this is hard to do if you take the activity bus home. Sometimes skiers will leave skis in the wax room over the weekend if they can't get them home or if they know they won't ski on the weekend.

A few end of the season announcements...

posted Feb 21, 2017, 8:36 AM by Sid Voss

✔️ Coach Voss lent his classic poles to one of our skiers.  If you have them, please email sidvoss@hopkinsnordic.com. Also, someone on the team has his Craft lobster mitts...would like to have them back.  Thanks!

✔️ Still have your uniform?  Bring it to the banquet, or
At HHS, put in a Ziplock bag with your name and drop it at the Athletic Office.
At West, put in a Ziplock bag with your name and give it to Jean Bury in the office.
At North, put in a Ziplock bag with your name and give to Deb Herman by the office.

✔️ Summer Wax your skis. You should put a coat of wax on your skis at the end of the season.  This will protect your bases and keep the bases from drying out.  Just drip some red or yellow wax on the bottom, make a couple of passes with the iron, and that's it.  Do not scrape until next winter.  There is red and yellow wax in the wax room.

✔️ Please take your bags, skis, and poles home from the wax room by the end of the week.  If you have rental skis in the wax room, Coach Voss will take them...don't forget to take home your poles.

✔️ If you have rental skis, you can bring them to return to Coach Voss at banquet.  Otherwise, he will be in touch with you about returning them.
