Captain Application for 2019/2020 Season

Schedule for the Rest of the Week 2/5-2/9

posted Feb 5, 2019, 10:43 AM by Aaron Giannobile

Congrats to our Sections team for some great racing Monday! And also congrats to our State Meet qualifiers.

State team, let's check in today at JV Champs or on Wednesday at practice to talk training up until the race and details for the meet.

We'll continue to practice this week as normal and now that it looks like the snow will continue and accumulate, here's the plan for the rest of the week:

Tuesday: JV Champs! Final race of the season for our JV team

Wednesday: Varsity and JV1 meet in parking lot of old chalet at Theo Wirth. There is a section race but it should be over by time we get there. Plus, if we get enough snow there's a possibility of skiing the natural snow trails. Bring both skate and classic.

Thursday: Everyone's invited (Varsity, JV1 & JV2) to go ski at French Regional park after school, bus will leave HHS at 3:15 and we'll be back by 5:30 pm. Skate ski

Friday: Varsity and JV1 will meet at Wirth at the Trailhead Building at 3:30 pm.

Saturday: Time and Location TBD, probably Wirth. As of now it may be too cold to practice early in the morning due to lows over night but we will try to meet up and ski at some point.

Looking Ahead:

Monday 2/11: We will try to get a ski in somewhere with a bus leaving HHS.

Tuesday 2/12 will be our last day of practice. We will be at school and will do team photos, uniform and gear turn in (Rental Skis). Please wear your uniform for the team photos, we will be taking them right away at 3-3:10 pm, then you can change and turn it in. Please also bring your skis if you have rented them from the team.

Our end of year Banquet will be the evening of Monday, February 25th. More details to come.

Race Info & Signup for JV Champs Tuesday Feb 5th

Last race of the season for JV skiers OR anyone who didn't race in Conference Champs last Friday. It will be a 5k skate race at Elm Creek starting at 4pm. The announcements and schedule for the week will come out later this evening.

Please let us know if you will be racing by Monday at 12:00pm.

Waxing: The wax room will be open on Monday after school for racers doing JV champs. We will have the wax picked and ready for you starting around 3:10pm. Dismissal Times for Racers:

Announcements regarding section team:
  • The section team is expected (unless you are racing the Loppet) to be at practice Saturday morning at 7:30am at Hyland for a 75 minute ski with pickups. I know it's early but it is important to ski after the conference race to recover and gear back up for Monday. Also, then you will be done skiing before the Luminary volunteering (Which we still need about 10 more volunteers for).
  • Waxing: you will need to come clean your classic skis and apply a base layer of wax on Sunday, then leave both your skate and classic skis with coaches for further glide waxing and top coats. Please have your classic skis marked so we know where your hard and klister zones are
  • Skis need to be dropped off by 2pm on Sunday in the wax room. Please make sure your skis are labeled with your kick zones and name.
Schedule for the day is as follows:

So here's where we stand:
  • Conference Champs was officially rescheduled as of midnight this morning to Friday 2/1 at Carver Park. It is still a pursuit race. The 5k skate race will start at 1:30pm and the classic 5k pursuit will start at 4pm.
  • JV Champs is rescheduled for Tuesday 2/5 at Elm Creek at 4pm, race info and signup will be sent out this weekend.
  • Saturday Practice: Volunteering at Loppet Luminaries at 10am. No team ski as there won't be an open park for us to ski together as a team.
  • The section team NEEDS to ski Saturday. You should all plan to meet and ski at Hyland at 7:30am and coaches will be following up on this. With the week off it is important to ski a recovery 75 min L1 ski with 5x20 second L5 pickups. to prepare for Monday's race. Saturday night is also an important night for SLEEP, so plan to take it easy and try to go to bed at a reasonable hour. The section team will be announced Friday after Conference Champs.
Conference racers will meet after school on Thursday at 3:00pm for a quick meeting and then to wax skis, the coaches will let you know what the wax will be at the meeting. You will need to wax both skate and classic skis and make sure your classic skis are cleaned, sanded and marked for the hard wax zones. If you get down to the wax room before the meeting, you may clean you classic skis but please do not start glide waxing.

The conference team is below, please make sure to let a coach know if you cannot race, otherwise I will register you. The section team will be announced on Friday after the race.

Updates for Week of January 28th

posted Jan 28, 2019, 6:29 PM by Aaron Giannobile

So here's where we are at this week:

I'm sure you've heard school has been cancelled Tuesday & Wednesday :) We will not be practicing either of these days but try to find something active to do indoors if possible.

Also due to weather, it is confirmed that JV champs race will not be held this week, but it is looking likely that it will be moved to next Tuesday 2/5 at Elm Creek. Time TBD

Conference Champs was supposed to be Thursday but will probably not be held then due to cold temps in the morning. It is looking likely that Conference Champs will now be on Friday at Carver Park. Time TBD. If this happens, then the conference team will meet at school Thursday after school to wax skis.

I am still waiting on final confirmation on the Friday Conference Champs and on JV Champs next week but should be able to have that finalized with the other conference coaches tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Finally, we will not be able to ski at Wirth Saturday because of Loppet Events, we may have a different plan to come but still plan to help volunteer to set up the Luminary Loppet at 10am. Should be a balmy 40 degrees ABOVE zero.

More to come tomorrow.

Announcements & Schedule for Week of January 28th

Announcements

All I can say is STAY TUNED TO REMIND FOR CHANGES THIS WEEK! With a forecast for snow Sunday into Monday followed by frigid temps, there will certainly be changes happening. We will adapt with the changes and conditions and send updates out via the Remind App. Make sure you have access to this this week to stay up-to-date.

Races this week: JV Champs was originally scheduled for Tuesday 1/29 at Baker Golf Course but was moved to Wednesday at Elm Creek due to lack of snow. Now, it looks like Wednesday will be below the -4 cutoff for legal racing according to the state high school league. We could be back to racing at Baker Tuesday but as of now, that also looks too cold. So we may reschedule for Friday... So needless to say, stay tuned. Also, bring stuff to workout at school as well all week as we'll be inside if the temps are too low to ski.

Conference Champs is scheduled for Thursday @ 11:30am at Wirth but again, it may be too cold to race. If it is too cold, it will likely just be cancelled for lack of other options as we'll be moving to focus on sections next week.

PASTA PARTY!!: There is a pasta party on Monday 1/28 @ 5pm this week open to all skiers at the Firehammer's home. The address will be sent with the Remind notice.

Volunteering: There are still volunteer opportunities this weekend to help set up for the Loppet Invite starting at 10am. Also, with new snow, the MYSL youth ski group will likely meet at Glen Lake Golf Course at 1:30pm this Sunday and they would love volunteers!

Schedule

Monday - Bus to Wirth leaving school at 3:15 and back around 5pm OR practice at school if snow is too bad. Bring indoor workout stuff as well as ski stuff

Pasta Party after practice at 5/5:30pm

Tuesday - Possible JV race at Baker OR practice inside at school if temps are too low, weight lifting/drills in gym. Bring indoor workout stuff as well as ski stuff

Wednesday - Possible JV race at Baker OR practice inside at school if temps are too low, weight lifting/drills in gym. Bring indoor workout stuff as well as ski stuff

Thursday - Conference Champs @ Wirth @ 11:30am, bus leaving HHS at 10am. Signup, race info, and conference team announcements to come OR alternative plan TBD if there is no race. Bring indoor workout stuff as well as ski stuff

Friday - If there is enough snow, Bus to Baker Park leaving school at 3:10pm and back around 5:45. JV2 is invited to come ski this day.

Saturday - Meet at Wirth Trailhead at 8am for skiing, followed by breakfast. Then we will all go volunteering to help set up for Loppet Luminaries at 10am.

Schedule & Announcements for Week of January 21st, 2019

posted Jan 20, 2019, 9:23 AM by Aaron Giannobile

Announcements

This week there is no school on Monday (MLK Day) or on Tuesday. Additionally, there are 2 races this week. We have varsity skate sprints on Tuesday and a JV only race Thursday at Elm Creek. Skiers cannot race in both races, if you have questions about which race you should be doing, ask Coach G.

This Monday we have a pasta party at the Hunwardsen's home at 5pm. We will have practice before it at Wirth and then skiers will need to organize their own ride to the pasta party. There will not be a bus this day and all are invited.

We have a couple of community service opportunities coming up that we encourage skiers to take part in.

1) We need volunteers to help set up for the The Luminary Loppet on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at 10am. See the Signup Genius for more info and to sign up

2) The Minnesota Youth Ski League (MYSL) is looking for volunteers grades 9-12 to help teach elementary age kids to classic ski on Sunday afternoons/evenings. Please consider signing up. As we are low on snow this year, the time and location will change each week. This week they are meeting at Hyland at 4:30 by Jan's Cabin (in the back by where the buses drop off). Mark Norquist is the lead on this and will teach you how to instruct. It is focused on fun and games. See Coach G with questions.

Schedule

Monday - Meet at Wirth Trailhead building at 3pm. Pasta party after practice at Hunwardsen's. A Remind will be sent out with the address. All groups are invited to practice and the pasta party, but you will have to organize your own rides as there is no school and will not be a bus.
Workout - Varsity/JV1: Easy 90 minute skate ski with 5x20 second L5 pickups.

Tuesday - Varsity meet at Elm Creek. See the signup post for more info. There is also no school this day so there will not be practice other than the race. Feel free to come out and cheer our team! The race starts at 3pm and there will be a bus leaving from HHS at 1:30 that is for racers only.

Wednesday - Bus to Wirth leaving school at 3:15pm and returning at 5:30pm
Workout - Classic ski 90 minutes L1 continuous

Thursday - JV1/JV2 skate race at Elm Creek, 4pm. Bus leaves HHS at 2:30pm.
Workout - Varsity should skate ski L1 for 90 minutes with 5x20 L5 pickups on hills. Work on quick turnover and generating speed at the top.

Friday - No bus, meet at Wirth at 3:30pm
Workout - Varsity/JV1 L4 Intervals

Saturday Time and location TBD - Pursuit workout - 1 hour skate ski then switch to 1 hour classic ski

posted Jan 18, 2019, 7:05 AM by Aaron Giannobile   [ updated Jan 18, 2019, 8:08 AM ]

Our next race is a varsity only race on Tuesday January 22nd, 2019 at Elm Creek. The race format is skate sprints. Each team will consist of 2 skiers. Each skier will ski 2 alternating laps and tag off their teammate between laps. Each lap will be about 1.2k. Each team will ski 2 heats, regardless of how they finish.

NOTE: There is no school this day so no need for release times! However, there will be a bus leaving from school at 1:30pm. Because there are 2 rounds of races, this meet takes a bit longer and so it starts at 3pm. We should return to school around 5:30/6pm.

Please sign up using the form below by Sunday, 7:00pm
