Details & Signup for Thursday 1/21, Varsity/JV1 Race @ 2pm

posted by Aaron Giannobile   [ updated ]

Please fill out this form by Wednesday 1/20 @ 4pm if you are planning to race.

I will excuse you from any classes you'll miss.  Wear your uniform to the race and DON'T FORGET YOUR BIB!!!

The race is at Baker National Golf Course (2935 Parkview Dr, Hamel, MN 55340). Get to Baker by 1:15pm, races start at 2pm.

You can't set up inside and need to remain outside unless using the bathroom. Wear a mask at all times while not racing.

**NEW COVID MASK RULE: For races, MSHSL will allow skiers to race without a mask. Skiers still need to line up at the start with a mask on, then can pull it down once the race starts. Skiers need to put a mask back on right after finishing. A Buff or neck gaiter works really well for this.

Wednesday
  • Varsity has option of practicing at Theo Wirth at 3:30pm. Coach G will have wax to put on your skis after practice. If you can't make it to Wirth, Coach Voss will have wax too at French Park.
  • JV1 will be at French Park at 5:15pm-6:30pm. Coach Voss will have wax.
  • Let the wax dry overnight and we'll brush out skis tomorrow at the race before you warm up.
ThursdayPlease arrive at Baker at 1:15pm. See coaches to brush out your skis, find out your wave assignment and warmup for 20-30 minutes. Race starts at 2pm and you'll be in mass wave starts. Please be at the start area at 1:50.

There will be 2 boys waves and 2 girls waves for each varsity and JV1 race. Each with up to 7 skiers from each school. The course will be the same as last years conference race and will be marked. A map with the course highlighted in green is below. (Not the Evergreen Trail). You can use the Island trail as a cool down loop.

Greetings!

See below for the full schedule. The following are a few announcements and updates.

  • Podiumwear ski jackets can be ordered here. Storefront will close on Jan 24th.
  • JV1 & JV2 skiers, if you didn't pick up uniforms and bibs on Thursday see Coach Voss this week. He has them sorted and ready to hand out.

  • The JV2 race for Tuesday has been cancelled. JV1 & Varsity will race on Thursday, more details and a race signup will be sent out early this week.
  • Please remember to keep filling out the daily attendance for each day before practice. The forms are below:
SCHEDULE - This week's Three Rivers Schedule is booked pretty full with conference races, hence the slightly less than ideal locations and times. But at least we still have snow and can ski!

Monday: Happy MLK Day. We won't be having team practice today because Three Rivers didn't schedule any team practices due to the holiday. Feel free to ski on your own at any Three Rivers Park

Tuesday: Team practice at Baker National Golf Course@ 3:30-4:45pm (Address: 2935 Parkview Dr, Hamel, MN 55340)

Wednesday: French Park 5:15-6:30pm, for skiing under the lights!
  • No JV2 or 3-Day/week skiers today
  • Varsity has option to go to Theo Wirth @ 3:30pm
Thursday
  • Varsity/JV1 Race @ Baker Golf Course, 2pm.
  • JV2 Skiers, practice @ French Park 3:30-4:45pm
FridayTeam practice at Baker National Golf Course@ 3:30-4:45pm (Address: 2935 Parkview Dr, Hamel, MN 55340)

Saturday/Sunday: Plan to ski on your own

Practice Updates - Fri. 1/15 & Mon. 1/18

posted Jan 15, 2021, 9:48 AM by Aaron Giannobile

Well sadly the snow we were hoping for has come in the form of slush. At least it'll all freeze again after this weekend and conditions will hopefully be better next week. See below for some updates.

Three Rivers passes will be handed out next week. You can still ski on your own at Three Rivers Parks, just have a student id ready and say you're with Hopkins Nordic, if anyone asks.

I will be posting next week's full schedule this weekend, but here's some updates as of now.

Friday 1/15: No team practice today due to trail conditions. Skiing will be wet and slow on natural-snow today until they freeze up again. If you want, you can ski on your own at any of the man-made snow trails like Hyland or Elm Creek, which should be holding up better. Varsity or those with passes to Theo Wirth can ski there. We recommend skate skiing today as classic would be tough without Klister.

Saturday 1/16: Varsity skiers check the training schedule. Coach Ditty will be putting a time out there where he'll be at Wirth with stuff to possibly classic ski. Bring skate skis/boots too, just in case.

Monday 1/18: No team practice due to MLK Holiday. Three Rivers is not scheduling any team practices this day. Skiers are welcome to ski on their own at any park.

Tuesday 1/19: We are going to cancel the JV2 race to give those skiers a little more time and experience before racing. All team practice will be at Baker National Golf Course from 3-5pm.

More to come!

JV 1 & 2 Practice Canceled for Thursday 1/14

posted Jan 14, 2021, 10:40 AM by Sid Voss

Due to the conditions, we are canceling our workout/practice for today.

If you are able, stop by today to get your uniform and bib at Lindbergh between 3:15 and 4:15.

If you are not able to stop by today, email Coach Voss and he will grab you a uniform and your bib and bring it to practice Friday and Monday. Please send your name, height, and approximate weight.  (sid@hopkinsnordic.org)

JV 1 & 2: Details for Practice on Thursday, January 14

posted Jan 13, 2021, 4:55 PM by Sid Voss

Our practice on Thursday, January 14 will be at Hopkins High School, outside the Lindbergh Center.  Here is what you need to know for practice:
  • Practice will run from 3:30-4:30.
  • We will meet on the edge of the parking lot, near Lindbergh Drive.
  • We will be skiing on the field, so you will need your skis, boots, and poles.
  • We will also be doing some "dry land" training--some strength drills and maybe a jog or run, so you will want your running shoes in your backpack or bag.
  • We will also be issuing uniforms and race bibs tomorrow.  You can come as early as 3:15 to get your uniform and bib. This will be inside the Lindbergh Center on second floor in one of the classrooms, which are near the entrance to Lindbergh.  Since we need to limit the number of people in the building, we will have a few skiers leave practice at a time, unless you get yours before we start practice at 3:30.
  • It looks like snow is on the way (yeah!), but depending on when the snow starts, it might be difficult driving.  If you have transportation issues, let Coach Voss know and he will grab you a uniform and your bib and bring it to practice Friday and Monday.  (sid@hopkinsnordic.org)

posted Jan 10, 2021, 8:05 AM by Aaron Giannobile   [ updated Jan 10, 2021, 8:21 AM ]

Greetings!

First, I'd like to say thank you to everyone for getting the season started. We had a great first week! Below are a couple of updates this week followed by the week's practice schedule.

Also, if you missed the parent info meeting, you can find the presentation here.

PODS
  • There have been a few updates to the pods due to the number of skiers we've had register. We now have a Varsity, JV1 Boys, JV1 Girls, and a JV2 pod. Check out the changes and current pods here. Let me know if you have questions or if I've missed anything
  • Note about the 2 registrations: There is a part-time (3 days/week) and full-time registration (5-6 days/week). The part-time is for 7th & 8th graders only. However, 7th & 8th graders CAN do the full time and show up every day to practice. Let me know if you have questions at all and I'm happy to help.
  • Please keep filling out your daily attendance for your pod each day before practice. The links are on the main page of our website here.
UNIFORM HANDOUT
  • We'll be passing out uniforms this week at the high school. We'll also be passing out a bib with a number and timing chip skiers need to wear at races over their uniforms. You will have the same bib all year long and can bring it home with you.
  • Handout will be at the Hopkins High School in the Lindbergh Center. Please plan to come in, pickup your stuff, and exit the building, due to Covid-19 capacity limits. Please don't linger inside.

  • JV1/JV2: THURSDAY PICKUP @ 3:15PM.
WEEK'S SCHEDULE

  • Friday - French Regional Park - 3:30-4:45pm
    • JV2 Part time skiers are invited to come ski today if they want, since we didn't get to ski Thursday!

  • Skiers must fill out their daily attendance form before attending any practice.

  • Look for your POD on day 1. Here are the tentative POD groups based on levels. This is subject to change as it’s hard to sort you all before meeting you!

Skiers who are not registered will not be allowed to practice. Questions on registration should be directed to the school athletics office 952-988-4691.

NODIC INFO MEETING. This year we are going to do the parent info meeting a little differently. I am going to pre-record a video and walk through the slides with important information and links.  Then, I will be hosting a virtual Q & A session on Tuesday, Jan. 5th from 6:30-7:30pm. I will be sending out the link via Remind before the meeting so make sure to sign up, instructions are in the presentation.

Updates 12/21

posted Dec 21, 2020, 2:09 PM by Aaron Giannobile

Our season is set to begin on Monday, Jan 4th. We’ll plan to meet at 3:15pm, location TBD

  • You MUST be registered for Nordic Ski BEFORE you can come to practice. You also must have a physical exam on file from the last 4 years to be eligible. To register for Nordic Ski, go to: https://hopkins2055a.cf.affinetysolutions.com/

Plan to rent skis? Please fill out the ski rental request and pay the $25 fee here prior to Dec. 28th so we can get skis out ASAP once the season starts. Skis can be handed out contactless outside of the Lindbergh Center by our Wax Room door.

Please see the Nordic Information Doc here for a lot of the details about the season. Some highlights are:

  • Masks: Please bring a mask or buff and plan to wear it at all times except when skiing, and if possible, we even suggest wearing a face covering while skiing as the trails can get crowded.

  • PODS: Skiers will be grouped into PODS with coaches into 25 or less people. Skiers will be sorted by level. More info to come.

  • Skiers will need to organize their own rides to practices, there will be no busses this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A virtual Parent Meeting will be held on Tuesday Jan. 5th. A communication will be sent out with the meeting details and links closer to that time. We’ll have two meetings:

  • 6:30pm - Meeting for NEW skiers and families

  • 7:30pm - Meeting for RETURNING skiers and families

The training plan is posted for the week here.

Updates - 12/15/2020

posted Dec 15, 2020, 9:19 AM by Aaron Giannobile

1. Our Nordic Chipotle Fundraiser is tonight! 4-8pm @ Main St. Chipotle in Hopkins. Use code ATETGB8 before checkout in ‘promo’ field to represent and help the Hopkins Nordic ski team!

2. Three Rivers Ski Pass Update: I have heard back from Three Rivers and they are still working out a way to get a discount code set up for use to buy passes before the season begins. THE GOOD NEWS is that Hopkins Nordic skiers can still ski at Three Rivers Parks without a pass until they get it figured out! You'll just need your student ID. More info to come as I have it.

3. If you need wax: Pioneer Midwest has some good wax packages for glide wax for you to use before the season starts and we can get wax to skiers. If you have a waxing iron, look for any SWIX, Rex or START wax. If you don't have an iron, there are some good liquid waxes out there, you'll just need a brush. Again, Pioneer Midwest has some packages for this. We'd suggest Rex Blue liquid or Rex G21 liquid. Click here for Pioneer Midwest's wax selections. Gear West is also a good resource and can help direct you to appropriate wax.
